Youth justice coordinators Print Version
Care and protection and youth justice coordinators/2186.htm | The coordinator structure/2185.htm |

Child, Youth and Family has developed a Youth Justice Plan that identifies those tasks from the Youth Offending Strategy that it is responsible for, and some other Child, Youth and Family focused actions.

Care and protection and youth justice coordinators
Coordinators are appointed under the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act to manage a family group conference process.

The care and protection coordinator receives referrals from social workers, the Courts and other people. The coordinator will consult with appropriate people involved in each case and bring the family and other involved people together. Everyone will work together to develop a Plan for the continuing safety of a child or young person. The coordinator is also responsible for regularly reviewing any decisions, recommendations or plans.

Youth justice coordinators receive referrals from enforcement agencies, like the Police. A coordinator will look at the possibility of dealing with any matter outside of criminal proceedings. If a family group conference is required then the coordinator will bring together the family, victim and the enforcement agency

If the offence is admitted, coordinators will record any decisions, recommendations or plan and make sure the plans are actioned and reviewed.

Youth justice principles are that young people should be held accountable for their activities. Any measures should:
  • strengthen family
  • keep young people in the community
  • develop the young person, and
  • have regard for victim’s interests.

The coordinator structure

Just as the service is divided into six regions, so are the coordinators. Coordinators in each region report to a regional manager. You can email the coordinators to make a referral or to find out about youth justice services in your area.
