Use of macrons on this site

Child, Youth and Family supports the correct use of the Maori language and in particular the Maori Language Commission guideline that macrons be used in Maori words where appropriate.

However, the ability to display macrons on our web site is limited by current technology and limited standardisation. If we used macronised vowels, we could not guarantee that Maori words would appear correctly on all the browser platforms we support. For this reason, we are not using macrons at this time. We are monitoring IT developments and will review our policy when we are assured we can display the macron correctly across all browser platforms.

For further information, and a good discussion of the problems surrounding this issue, you may want to read the following article:

The TechnoPhile: Biculturalism and IT by Alastair Smith and Robert Sullivan, Library Life, September 1999.
