Being a parent Print Version

Being a parent or caregiver is one of the most important and rewarding jobs we can ever have – and it can also be one of the toughest. Every day we have choices to make about how to bring up our children. Being a parent or caregiver isn’t always easy – and it’s a job we get little training for. But it is something we can learn.

Asking our families or whanau for advice, sharing with other parents and caregivers, reading parenting books, talking with our doctors, Plunket nurse or joining a parent’s group are just some of the ways we can learn about being a good parent or caregiver.

At Child, Youth and Family an important part of our focus on helping to make kids safe and families stronger is to work with parents and caregivers, the wider family group and whanau to help families maintain and strengthen their child-rearing role.

In this parenting/caregiving section of our web site you will find information and resources to help you look after your children.
