Celebrity endorsement for foster parenting

20 May 2010

TV sensation Nigel Latta is putting his parenting expertise and public profile to good use – leading a campaign to recruit more foster parents for Child, Youth and Family.

Nigel describes foster parents as ‘the best therapists, who can really change lives'. The psychologist and front man for 'The Politically Incorrect Parenting Show' has had extensive involvement with Child, Youth and Family over 20 years and is hugely passionate about the important role foster parents play.

Nigel recently hosted an evening in Dunedin for potential foster parents, where he spoke honestly of the need for tolerance, stickability, a sense of humour and selflessness.  He described Child, Youth and Family social workers as "amazing people who do an amazing job".

"This has helped us to begin the process of becoming foster parents with our eyes open," said one couple.

The evening inspired 25 people to attend a second information night, held on Wednesday May 19. One participant described the evening as a "compassionate but realistic" way of describing the difference foster parents can make. Another participant said it was a "good opportunity to ask questions without feeling intimidated."

Foster parents are the heart and home of Child, Youth and Family. They welcome children and young people into their families and help turn young lives around.

Foster parents provide emergency, short-term or longer-term care and to look after young people of all ages.
