Darth Vader celebrates 10th birthday of Children's Day

30 March 2010

It was the 10th anniversary of Children's Day this March, with literally thousands of families coming together to celebrate Kiwi kids. Children got to be stars for a day, and the message was that they are stars everyday.

Among the crowds at a special picnic in Wellington's Botanical Gardens, were Darth Vader, storm troopers, and a band of pirates doing a treasure hunt.

Similar events were held throughout the country, including a fun day in Christchurch attended by thousands of families, and a huge toddlers' day out in Auckland.

Starship Hospital ran an event for their children called 'You're a star!', which included a live radio show, on-air competitions and an 'open mike' for kids to showcase their talents, as well as plenty of hospital volunteers dressed in costume, and other crafts, activities and games.

With over 500 registered events, it was one of the biggest Children's Days ever. "We want all children in New Zealand to be safe, strong and thrive, and by celebrating our children on one day of the year, it helps people think about creating this evironment every day of the year," says Sue Lytollis, the national coordinator for Children's Day.

Children's Day is organised by Child, Youth and Family, along with local community groups.
