Katie found the right path when she came to live at a residence.

katies story

…now I know I can be anything I want to be.

Katie was having trouble at school and had got into the wrong crowd when she came to live at the residence.

While she was staying there, her social worker Nick saw that she was really good at art. He got her into painting, and even helped her learn Māori carving, which she was really passionate about.

The people at the residence believed in her and helped her find the things she was good at. Katie started having new hopes and dreams.

They put Katie back in touch with her family, and when she left she went and lived with her dad. It wasn’t always easy, she had to follow his rules and stay away from her old friends. But being back with her family helped Katie turn her life around. She is now back at school and wants to study woodwork at polytech.

"My social worker told me that there were two paths I could take – the right one or the wrong one. Even though the wrong one seemed more fun at the time, it was taking the right path that got me where I am now." Katie.
