Parenting links  

There are many groups around New Zealand that provide support and services for families. Here are some you can call for support and advice.

  • Citizens Advice Bureaux for just about everything: Phone 0800 FOR CAB (0800 367 222) Citizens Advice Bureaux are a good place to start if you need help. They offer free confidential advice and can put you in touch with other support services in your area.
  • Barnardos for family counselling and grief counselling: Phone 0800 4 PARENT (0800 472 7368)
  • FAIR Centre of Barnardos for childcare: Phone 0800 222 345
  • CAPS for parent support – in regional centres around NZ – see your local phone book.
  • Commissioner for Children for child well-being: Phone 04 471 1410
  • Work and Income for benefits, allowances, childcare subsidies: Phone 0800 559 009
  • Plunket Line 24-hour support for anything to do with parenting and children under five years: Phone 0800 933 922.
  • Relationship Services for family or relationship problems: Phone 0800 RELATE (0800 735 283).
  • Samaritans for phone support: See your local phone book.
  • Youthline for phone support for young people: Phone 0800 376 633.
  • National Poison Centre for emergency advice on poisons: Phone 03 474 7000
  • Kids Friendly NZ is an online resources centre for parents and highlights such things as family-friendly business and places throughout New Zealand
  • Parents Inc. (formally Parenting with Confidence Inc.)

  • Parent Care (premature and special needs children)
  • Parent-to-Parent (support for parents of special needs children)

    There are lots of good books on parenting and child development. Why not visit your library and take your child along too? Most libraries have regular story times and other activities your child will enjoy.
